The Challenge: Technical Debt Was Costing Votes.
HandyNation is the mobile bridge to NationBuilder, the world’s leading political CRM. The legacy app was suffering from a ‘Architectural Drift’ brittle state management. API deprecations caused crashes, and critical voter data collected in rural (offline) areas was being lost due to sync failures. They needed a complete architectural overhaul without disrupting active campaigns.

- Step 4: GraphQL Mutation (Data pushed to NationBuilder API).

Hybrid to Native Flutter Migration
We deprecated the unstable hybrid web-wrapper and rebuilt the core in Flutter. This delivered 60FPS native performance on both iOS and Android from a single codebase, eliminating UI jank and reducing maintenance costs by 50%.
Offline-First Architecture (SQLite)
Field ops don’t happen in the office. We implemented a Local-First Database architecture. Canvassers can work entirely offline for hours. The app queues mutations locally and intelligently syncs via Background Workers once a signal is detected.
GraphQL API Upgrade
To handle the scale of data, we migrated the networking layer to NationBuilder’s new GraphQL API. This reduced payload sizes by 70%, creating a snappier experience even on low-bandwidth 3G networks.
